Online Scrapbooking Classes Are Just Not Doing it for Me

I mentioned in an earlier post that I've developed a dislike for online scrapbooking classes, especially the ones with a long list of supplies to purchase.  The cost of a class can range from free to upwards of $95.  I got an email invite to one of these classes this weekend and, though the class sounds real nice, it's been my experience that the time I spend "in" class is yet one more activity that takes away from the time I could be, um, scrapbooking!

And I have a confession to make.  Of the half-dozen or so online classes I signed up for last year?  I didn't finish a single one, not even the ones I paid money for!

That just made me feel stupid not to mention a little poorer in both money and time.  Oh, and printer ink and paper, too, because it seems there's always stuff you gotta print out; worksheets, checklists, workbook dividers, organizational charts, and other handouts.  Aren't we digital scrapbookers trying to move toward paperless???  I only want to print my finished layouts! Instead, I ended up with a stack of stuff printed on cardstock but that I never put to use because I both lost interest in the class because there was too much  filling in of the blanks on those printouts (by hand!) AND I was busy scrapbooking.......!

Most classes now also include audio and/or video lessons.  I seldom have the patience to watch the video lessons (and I have even less patience with audio because I am a very visual learner). I'm sure a lot of people like them, but I don't.  Just give me a written tutorial with a few (a few, not dozens!) of screenshots.  I like to have something static to refer back to later if I need to; I don't want to have to watch the video all over again!  I can save a written tutorial in my Tutorials folder on my laptop and then search that folder for key words to find all tutorials dealing with the skill I am interested in.  As far as I know you can't search a video in that way.

And let's face it; there are so many versions of Photoshop CS and Photoshop Elements and Digital Imaging Pro, and Scrapbook Max, and MemoryMixer, and there are new ones popping up all the time, these classes can't possibly cover the detailed step-by-step for every one of them.  I would rather the "lessons" just use terms such as "select {insert name of object here}" and let me decide which tool (in Photoshop CS3, in my case) to use to do that.  Let's understand our software, not just follow step-by-step procedures to perform a task because when one of those steps doesn't work for our particular software, we're hosed!

But not if you've learned to use the tools in your scrapbooking software's toolbox.  Then you can just say to yourself: "Self, my software does that in a different way, and I know what it is!"

Back to those {usually quite long} "supply" lists............granted, they are usually at their most damaging to your wallet if you are doing traditionl {paper} scrapbooking but, good grief, I've seen some for online digital scrapbooking that are ridiculous!  Most common is for the supply list to consist of kits and other products sold at the website that is offering the class.  Well, ok, that's a marketing technique to get more sales, I understand that.  But the rebel in me wants the choice to use products that I already have or {gasp!} my own designs.  Some instructors do say go ahead and use whatever you want or have but the lessons (and screenshots) are always geared toward using what's on the supply list.  Sorry, but that just saps my own creativity.

LOTS of people love those classes; they must, or there wouldn't be such a huge number of them being offered, and more popping up every day.  If you're one of those people, more power to ya, and have fun.

But don't look for me in class. ;-D

Layout Using FREE Wee Three Trees Elements

In my last post I offered a last-minute Christmas freebie, a set of three embossed tree elements.  (You can still download the set at 4shared by clicking here.)

Today I just wanted to share a quick layout I made using the elements.  As you can see I changed the color of the trees to match my background, resized and moved them around until I was happy with the balance of the layout.  I love simple layouts that allow the photo or photos to be the focus.

The background "paper" is actually a texture that I downloaded from the Shadowhouse Creations blog.  The blog creator, skeletalmess, frequently posts textures, tutorials, and brushes which he offers as free downloads under a creative commons license.  I love his stuff!  You can apply the textures to photos, too.  Look through his blog and you'll see some of his own gorgeous artwork.  I think you'll find it very impressive!

How is your scrapbooking coming along?

Cool Digital Paperclips and a FREEBIE!

One of my latest digital scrapbooking layouts showcasing the use of one of my latest digital scrapbooking products - "paperclips" in the shape of talk bubbles. Or, perhaps, in the case of this particular layout, thought bubbles!

Here is the set that I designed yesterday:

Aren't they fun?? The set includes seven different talk/thought bubbles, each one is delivered both with and without dropshadows. They are 300 dpi and delivered in .PNG format with a transparent background.

Use them like any digital paperclip. Position the clip over your photo, paper, tag or whatever, and then erase the portion of the clip that shouldn't show because in real life it would be hidden underneath the photo or paper. Adjust your dropshadows and you have totally realistic "clips" to add dialogue to the photos on your layout. You're gonna use these over and over again!

Easily change the color to match your layouts, too. In Photoshop set your foreground color chip to the color you want. In the layers palette select the layer containing the clip then add a hue/saturation adjustment layer. In the hue/saturation box click the colorize button. Move the lightness slider to the left until color appears. Then use the three sliders to adjust the color to your liking.

Want to try one out? Just click here (4shared) or here (mediafire) for a free downloadable talk bubble. Exactly which one I'm giving you is a surprise!

To get the complete set at my online store for just $ .99 click here. (Might as well check out some of my other products while you're there, don't you think???)

I'd love to hear what you think, so please leave me a comment and/or send me a quick note.

Enjoy!

My Freebies - Allow Me to Respond to your Comments!

First off, I'm terribly flattered that so many of you like my FREE Birthday, Father's Day, and Graduation photo masks! And downloaded them! And requested personalized photo masks for your graduates (I'm still making them, so send me an email and let me know what name you'd like)!

Secondly, let me just mention that all the above photo masks are still available, so download to your heart's content!

Finally, I've recently learned how hard it can be to reply to the comments that people leave on my blog. Frustratingly hard, in fact! So when I came across a brief tutorial on the LWM3B blog on how to set up your blog profile so that your comments contain your email address, I immediately knew I wanted to put a link to it here. Take a peek and, if you are so inclined, follow the easy steps to customize your blog profile so that instead of noreply-comment@blogger.com being listed as your email address in any comments you leave on other peoples' blogs, your own email address will be listed. That way the blog's owner can reply to you! Maybe even send you stuff! Free stuff!

Thx for visiting my blog, come back again, and please.....customize your blog profile so I can reply to your comments!

Freebies-Father's Day Digital Photo Masks

(Background paper by Vinnie Pearce)

June is one of my favorite months. It marks so many things; the start of summer, graduations, birthdays (there are a lot of June birthdays in my family including my husband, my son, my daughter-in-law, and my sister); but the best thing about June is Father's Day.

I made the layout above using one of the photo masks I created especially for Father's Day. When I think of my dad, I always think of the things he taught me, starting with riding a bicycle. It's kind of the "thing" that daddy's do; teach the kids to ride bikes, play sports, drive, even dance (which my dad taught me also), and later, for girls anyway, how to "handle" boys!

I remember so well; I was sixteen years old and waiting for a date to arrive. I was unsure where my date was taking me -- a nice restaurant, or just a run-of-the-mill one? I didn't quite know what to wear. I told my dad, "When he arrives, if he's all dressed up, tell him that I'll be down in a few minutes. If he's dressed casually, tell him I'll be right down." That was our code, so that I would know what to wear. I was dressed casually; if my date appeared dressed to the nines, then my dad would say, "she'll be down in a few minutes," giving me a little time to change into something fancier.

I started out to make just a few masks to share with you, to use when making cards or scrapbook layouts. Well, I must admit, I got a little carried away! I kept coming up with yet another word, or set of words, that describes a father, or the relationship between and father and a child. It was hard to stop!

Here are twelve photo masks that I'm offering as freebies. Each one is a separate .PNG file that you can use in any way you wish. Use them as is, as I did in the layout above, modify them in anyway you like, or take them apart and use the pieces separately, it's up to you. My designs are copyright-free, so I encourage you to do whatever you want with them.

Here are the previews. Each preview shows 4 photo masks. Most of them are at 12" x 12" (one is at 8" x 8" for some weird reason!). Of course, they can be resized to any size you wish, or modified to suit you. I hope you think of these photo masks as a jumping-off point. Go, my friend, and make of them what you will, lol!

All 12 photo masks
are included in the .ZIP file that you can
download FREE at4shared
and mediafire

{sorry, these links have expired, but you can still get these masks here!}

These photo masks are delivered to you in a .ZIP file. Once you have downloaded the .zip file, and extracted the files in it, you will be able to access each of the 12 files as a .PNG file. Drag it into a new document, modify it in any way you like, drag in your fave photo of your dad, add a background paper and your own personal journaling, and you have a layout fit for a Father's Day card, or a digital scrapbook layout ready to be added to your " Book of Me."

I would love to see the Father's Day cards, or digital scrapbook layouts, that you create with these photo masks. Please send them to me via deborah at webajeb dot com or send me a link. Be sure to let me know whether I can showcase them in a blog posting!

Enjoy!

A Quick Page and Page Heroes

Picked up a fun little quick page freebie at Creashens this morning, modified it just a bit to please me, popped in a photo of my little-girl-cat, Scout, enjoying the spring weather, and . . . done! The kit that goes along with this freebie is really awesome and spring-like and cheerful. You can check it out at The Daily Digi where Shen is being featured in the Sponsor Spotlight.

Quick pages are just that - a quick way to put together a digital scrapbook layout in less than no time at all. I have quick pages - I call them Page Heroes - on my website. Check 'em out! They are now copyright-free (as are ALL my digital scrapbooking products) so share them with your friends, include them in your own kits, modify them in way you like, etc.

(The TOU currently delivered bundled with the Page Hero files is outdated-I will be replacing it soon. Until then please click here for my latest Terms of Use document.)

Really Quick Boy Scrapbook Layout

Sometimes a picture just says it all. My nephew's expression when he saw me pointing my camera at him really needs no caption!

Sometimes I want a a very simple one-photo layout - like this. The background paper is Club Scrap Digital and I'm sorry but I can't remember where I got the polaroid frame. The postal stamp is from a dingbats alpha downloaded from the internet. The stapes are mine.

And that's it!

At long last! My first digital kit, "Fresh As," was created with Spring in mind, and Rainy Winter outside my window. My longing for spring, and my enjoyment of the rain that we desperately need here in northern California, are both reflected in the papers and elements of this kit. Included are the springlike colors of yellows, greens, and oranges; delicate flowers, a weathered picket fence, brads sporting spring-colored stripes, a pre-made title, and plenty of word art to add spring-related quotes or poetry to your layouts.

Included is a bonus: a custom color swatch with 18 colors that exactly match the kit papers. Easy instructions are included on how to load the swatch to Photoshop or Elements. With the custom colors you can easily create additional papers and elements, as well as text and titles, that perfectly match the contents of the "Fresh As" kit.

Get everything in all three previews (above)
for the special low price of just $2.99

Can't wait to hear what you think of my first kit, and to see the great layouts you come up with.

Wild Sea, Wild Life Digital Scrapbook Layout

(click on image to view a larger version)

A couple of weeks ago I spent several days in Pacific Grove, CA. (next-door to Monterey Bay) at a scrapbooking get-together. We stayed at the Asilomar Conference Center, which is right on the coast. I took my bike and managed to get out twice for nice rides along the coast. Of course, my camera always went along and, on my first ride I was treated to several sightings of the local deer.

I just love the juxtaposition of the ocean on one side of the street and, right on the other side, deer browsing in people's front yards!

The totally cool thing about digital scrapbooking as opposed to traditional? No waiting to get photos developed! As soon as I got back to the workroom I downloaded my photos onto my laptop and created the above two-page layout.

Done!

Digital Scrapbook Paper - Barack Obama

If you missed the freebie paper, or have already purchased one paper and want one or both of the others, here they are in a set, for just $2.49! Each paper normally sells (on my website) for $1.00 each, so this is a deal. Just use the Buy Now button below.

There is more Obama paper and Word Art to come in the next few days. I hope to also get some embellishments created, too, as well as another patriotic-style alpha, I'm thinking a more formal looking one. Basically, I'm just letting my imagination take over and seeing where it takes me.

So, if you have anything in mind, Obama-style, that you'd like to see, that would really make your Inauguration 2009 pages complete, just let me know and I'll see what I can do. I always love a challenge!

I'd love to see any layouts you make with my digital designs, so don't hesitate to email them to me, or send me a link to where they are posted.

Happy scrapping, and be sure to check back for more fun stuff!

Cool Collages

I've been creating collages today, with the Quick Collage Templates by Scrapbooks Etc. Here are a few.

Ocean Beach at Golden Gate State Park , California:
The historic Fisher-Hanlon House in Benicia, CA.:
The Solano County Fair in California:
Queen Wilhelmina Garden at Golden Gate Park, California:
Aren't these cool and fun? I'll be making more. I'm finding collages are perfect when I have a bunch of "general" photos of an outing or event. You know...those photos that you love, but really don't require a caption, and sometimes not even a title, because they pretty much tell the "story" on their own?

Gather up a handful of your own photos and send them off to me. I'll make you one of these lickity-split!
