Online Scrapbooking Classes Are Just Not Doing it for Me

I mentioned in an earlier post that I've developed a dislike for online scrapbooking classes, especially the ones with a long list of supplies to purchase.  The cost of a class can range from free to upwards of $95.  I got an email invite to one of these classes this weekend and, though the class sounds real nice, it's been my experience that the time I spend "in" class is yet one more activity that takes away from the time I could be, um, scrapbooking!

And I have a confession to make.  Of the half-dozen or so online classes I signed up for last year?  I didn't finish a single one, not even the ones I paid money for!

That just made me feel stupid not to mention a little poorer in both money and time.  Oh, and printer ink and paper, too, because it seems there's always stuff you gotta print out; worksheets, checklists, workbook dividers, organizational charts, and other handouts.  Aren't we digital scrapbookers trying to move toward paperless???  I only want to print my finished layouts! Instead, I ended up with a stack of stuff printed on cardstock but that I never put to use because I both lost interest in the class because there was too much  filling in of the blanks on those printouts (by hand!) AND I was busy scrapbooking.......!

Most classes now also include audio and/or video lessons.  I seldom have the patience to watch the video lessons (and I have even less patience with audio because I am a very visual learner). I'm sure a lot of people like them, but I don't.  Just give me a written tutorial with a few (a few, not dozens!) of screenshots.  I like to have something static to refer back to later if I need to; I don't want to have to watch the video all over again!  I can save a written tutorial in my Tutorials folder on my laptop and then search that folder for key words to find all tutorials dealing with the skill I am interested in.  As far as I know you can't search a video in that way.

And let's face it; there are so many versions of Photoshop CS and Photoshop Elements and Digital Imaging Pro, and Scrapbook Max, and MemoryMixer, and there are new ones popping up all the time, these classes can't possibly cover the detailed step-by-step for every one of them.  I would rather the "lessons" just use terms such as "select {insert name of object here}" and let me decide which tool (in Photoshop CS3, in my case) to use to do that.  Let's understand our software, not just follow step-by-step procedures to perform a task because when one of those steps doesn't work for our particular software, we're hosed!

But not if you've learned to use the tools in your scrapbooking software's toolbox.  Then you can just say to yourself: "Self, my software does that in a different way, and I know what it is!"

Back to those {usually quite long} "supply" lists............granted, they are usually at their most damaging to your wallet if you are doing traditionl {paper} scrapbooking but, good grief, I've seen some for online digital scrapbooking that are ridiculous!  Most common is for the supply list to consist of kits and other products sold at the website that is offering the class.  Well, ok, that's a marketing technique to get more sales, I understand that.  But the rebel in me wants the choice to use products that I already have or {gasp!} my own designs.  Some instructors do say go ahead and use whatever you want or have but the lessons (and screenshots) are always geared toward using what's on the supply list.  Sorry, but that just saps my own creativity.

LOTS of people love those classes; they must, or there wouldn't be such a huge number of them being offered, and more popping up every day.  If you're one of those people, more power to ya, and have fun.

But don't look for me in class. ;-D

Rogue Digital Scrapbooking

At the start of a brand new year I always want CHANGE.

Does anyone else feel that way?

It just seems like the perfect time to start something new, or to stop doing something I dislike or am tired of, or that's not adding value to my life.  Having just enjoyed the holidays, and the extra family time they usually bring, is another reason this time of the year is perfect for re-evaluating what's truly important, and for putting the unimportant things out at the curb with the rest of the trash!

Now that it's a brand new year, I am going to be trying some new things here at Webajeb.  But before I tell you what those things are, here are a few things I will NOT be doing:

* Offering online digital scrapbooking classes that require you to buy my products.
* Using the phrases "digital goodness" or "ribbony goodness" or anything remotely similar.
* Putting together a creative team to make layouts with my products.
* Having contests or giveaways as a way to get you to leave comments on my blog.
* Giving out or accepting meaningless blog awards that someone made up.
* Sponsoring, or being a part of, a blog train.
* Charge extra, or say no, if someone wants to use my products commercially.
* Posting photos of my home remodeling projects on this blog instead of my personal blog.
* Posting links to freebies that expire after a certain amount of time.
* A restrictive Terms of Use policy.

LOL!  As you've probably guessed, these are things that I don't care much for. Most of them are popular right now in the scrapbooking world but as a "rogue" digital scrapbooker, I've never like following trends. It drives me crazy when one scrapbooking blog starts a blog train, for example, and then all of a sudden every scrapbooking blog has a blog train. Have you ever tried to work your way through a blog train and collect all the freebies? You can waste literally hours of precious scrapbooking time clicking through all the blogs and downloading stuff that you'll probably never use, don't need, and won't be able to find later if by chance you do want to use it.

However, I digress!

Some things that will stay the same:

* Webajeb content that's all about digital scrapbooking.  (If you want to get to know me on a more personal basis, you are more than welcome to follow my personal blog.)
* A simple, uncluttered blog design.
* Copyright-free content and digital products.
* Freebies with links that never expire.
* Samples of my work, both personal and for clients.

And the new stuff!  I'm excited about heading off in a bit of a different direction this year. Webajeb is going to be more about skills than products.  Oh, I'll still be creating my own digital products and offering them for sale and as freebies but I will be including brief tutorials whenever I can to teach you ways to make the product more useful to you.

My "Wee Three Trees" freebie (download it at 4shared here) is a good example of this.  With the elements I included directions on how to easily change their color to match your background paper or photo(s).  To me, having a single .png file of an element and being able to change its color to suit me, is better than having 12 copies of the same .png file, with each in a different color.

I'll also be writing more tutorials that teach you the skills you need to make your own paper and elements, on the fly, instead of having to spend precious scrapbooking time searching your digital files or the internet for that perfect item.

I can't even think how much time I've wasted searching for stuff on my external hard drive.  Obviously, lots of people have the same issue or there wouldn't be so many digital file organization software packages out there!  Not only do we, as digital scrapbookers, have a lot of photos, but we also have thousands of digital product files!  Keeping all that stuff organized and tagged is frustrating and takes constant diligence.  Frankly, I barely have the patience for it (hence, my dislike for blog trains).

Another new thing is one that I'm super excited about: layered quick pages.  Yep, a combination of layered templates and quick pages!!  These .PSD & .TIF files will be completed scrapbook layouts (a quick page) that are ready for your photos - the difference is that the file is still in layers, like a template, so you will be able to add, delete, or move the layer contents around, change the color or size of individual elements, even pull elements out to use on other scrapbook layouts!

Because I'm most excited about the layered quick pages, I'm going to be busily creating a BUNCH of them over the next month or so (hopefully not to the total abandonment of tutorials, heh), so be sure to check back frequently.

I'll have the first one up either later today, or tomorrow!

The Rogue Digi-Scrapper

I've never been one to follow the crowd, and my own unique personality has been wanting to bust out, so get ready for rogue digi-scrapping in 2010!

It'll be unique, unusual, different and, most of all, FUN!

Fun and FREE Digital Alpha PLUS Word Art

What's more fun that a bit of FREE digital Word Art??  How about the entire alphabet plus numbers AND punctuation (in .PNG format and 300 dpi)??!

Several designers have created "outlined" alphas, and then overlap the letters as I did above, for a really fun look.  I tried to find a set to purchase that allows S4H use (scrapbooker for hire) at no extra charge, but was unsuccessful, so I ended up creating my own.  It was fun, and now I can use them in any way I want on either my own personal layouts, or for client layouts.

AND - I'm giving them to you - FREE!  I've zipped them up into one file which you can download from 4shared by clicking here.  Resize, recolor, and use in any way you like.  All of my products are copyright-free so no worries - just have fun!

All of the letters of the alphabet are in one .PNG file, so you'll need to marquee each letter and copy & paste (or drag) to your document.  Overlap the letters as desired to get the look of the "Drama Queen" word art.

One of these days I'll make individual .PNG files for each letter, and offer the set in my online store, but that will have to wait until I have fewer client projects.  Meanwhile, enjoy the alpha, and I'd love to know what you think of it, and see what you use it for.

Four Seasons Clipping Masks AND a Freebie!

Well, I was supposed to be working on Back-to-School clipping (photo) masks but I got distracted when I discovered these other masks I had start to create awhile back! I decided to finish them up first, then go on to the Back-to-School masks.

I had a lot of fun creating these, and then using them in layouts. Here is my layout using all four masks:

(paper & element by Amy Clegg)

You could do a similar layout with photos of your kids from each season, or your baby's first year of seasons, document your garden in each season, whatever your imagine comes up with!

The masks work great individually, too:

My photos are only so-so (I am not a great photographer -- yet), but if you've got totally awesome photos of the four seasons in your area, you could do them individually like the layouts above, perhaps use a more coordinating background than I have, print them out, and frame and hang them as a quartet as home decor. I can envision that looking pretty nice! Or, how cute would it be to do the same thing with baby's first year photos, framed in white, and hung in baby's room?

I'm getting some great ideas, and I hope you are, too.

You can get all four of these clipping masks in my online store here for just $1.49!

If you'd like to try one of the masks first (FREE!), simply sign up to be notified via email whenever I update my blog. Use the "Opt In" button on the left-hand side of my blog and, in the comments section of the form, indicate which mask you'd like. I'll send it to you via return email.

Thx for stopping by!

Special Effects with Photoshop CS3

I've been taking some online classes at Jessica Sprague's website on editing and enhancing digital photos, and also about adding special effects to them like frames, cool text, word art, textures, etc. It's so much fun!

Here's my effort from Lesson 1 of Jessica's class titled "Photo Editing: Frame-ups and Special Effects:" I first took the photo through the steps I learned in the class "Photo Editing: Good-to-Great Workflow" and then I cropped it, applied a digital frame, and added the word art and text.I love how it turned out! It could be framed as is, or placed on a digital scrapbook layout.

The "frame-ups" class is instructor-led, by Jessica herself, and is going on now. I'm sure it'll be offered again so if you are interested take a peek at her website. The "workflow" class is self-paced so you can get in on it anytime you like. There are other classes, too, on digital scrapbooking, organization, and even mini-classes where you make a single hybrid scrapbooking page.

I'm hoping to get caught up on the lessons in the "frame-ups" class (I was on vacation during the first week) and will share my finished creations here as I go.

Keep an eye out for a new freebie SOON, too!

My Five Favorite Scrapbooking Blogs

I browse the internet a LOT. I'm always on the lookout for new digital designers (and, boy does it seem like there are new ones every day), different layout ideas, and fresh inspiration - not to mention freebies, lol.

Sure, I love 'em as much as you do! Then when I find a designer whose stuff I just LOVE, I go check out their store to see what they've got that I just can't live without.

I was just emailing my BFF a list of my (current) favorite designers' blogs and thought I'd share them with my blog readers, too. Here they are....(singing)...these are a few of my favorite blogs....:

{we are} Storytellers
Pamela Donnis Designs
The Daily Digi
Lindsay Jane Designs
Creations by Rachael

This is my SHORT LIST. I subscribe to over 100 blogs and probably 2/3 of them have something to do with scrapbooking. I just find them so inspiring, and often reading a few posts and looking at the layouts others have done can jump-start my own creativity.

Have fun exploring some new blogs, and each blog will probably lead to you other blogs, and so on, and so on, and so on . . . .

Junk Mail Inspiration

Artistic inspiration can come from pretty much anywhere. I get a lot of mine from magazines, billboards, product labels and boxes, kid's artwork, and many other places. A couple days ago I got a piece of junk mail from a mail-order pharmacy and the design of the front and back pages really caught my eye:
Simple, clean, graphic. Just the kind of stuff I love. Sheesh, I even like the color scheme. Anyway, I knew immediately that these would be great digital scrapbooking templates so I sat right down and created some. Here they are:

FREE to my blog readers for a limited time

download from mediashare here
download from 4shared here

(more templates here)

I like them! I like each one on its own, and I also like them as a 2-page spread. Just think how these could be gussied up into fancy layouts, or kept as simple and classy as they are.

As you can see I didn't add any styles or drop-shadows to the text or the circles, so add your own if you want. The circles could be used for photos or journaling, a mixture of both, or whatever. I just love how versatile these templates are.

I made the templates in the square format that I most often scrap in, but am wondering . . . How many people would like to see templates in 8.5 x 11, or some other size? Just let me know if you do, and I'll add some different sizes. I'll even convert existing templates to other sizes, if you like, whaddya think o' them beans?

AND . . . If you're not a digital scrapbooker - No worries. I scrapbook for others, and would be happy to customize these templates, or any of my templates or Page Heroes (pre-designed pages), for you with your own photos. Click here to see how easy it is to order (not to mention you can check out my new recession-busting prices).

Please leave some comment love!

New (FREEBIE) Digital Scrapbooking Template - One Heart

Yesterday was such a productive day! Boy, once I got the majority of my website updates finished and could get back to creating and designing, the ideas I've had in the back of my head have just been pouring out! (Having all that techie stuff hanging over my head has not been good - I'm totally longing for the day I can pay someone to do that for me!)

Anyway, I'd like everyone to benefit from my good day so I'm offering one of the templates I made for FREE! Here it is:

Download from 4shared

Download from mediafire

(sorry, links have expired, but you can still get the template here)

It's a layered .PST file, so just open it in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, and do a Save As with a new name. Then drag your photos, paper, etc. into your new file. Some of the layers in the .PSD file have a plus sign in front of the name; this is to designate layers to which you can clip your paper or photos. This is a quick and easy way to use templates! Or, use whatever method you prefer.

The journaling lines are on layers of their own so you don't have to use those spaces for journaling if you'd rather put a photo or embellishment there instead. The title and the background paper with the text on it are also on their own layers. Use them or add your own. Templates are SO versatile; that's probably why I like them so much.

I'd love to see what you do with this template so send me a web-size version of your layout, or a link to where it's posted on-line. Everyone that does that can choose another of my templates FREE, just let me know which one you'd like.

I'll leave the above download links active for at least a week to give you a chance to snag this template. After that the template will still be available in my online store.

Enjoy!

Freebie - OBAMA Digital Scrapbooking Embellishment

(Click on the image to download / drop-shadows are only for preview)

The response for Wednesday's Obama digital scrapbook paper was overwhelming! Clearly, there's a desire for all-things-Obama right now. So, I've been working on more digital papers, an alpha, and there will also be word art by the end of the weekend, and who knows what else I may come up with! So be sure to check back frequently. Or, better yet, subscribe to my blog (use the Subscribe button on the top left) or add me to your blog reader; that way you'll get instant notification when I post an update.

Today's freebie (above) is also a sneak peek at the alpha that I'll be finishing up this morning (Friday 01/16/09). "Obama" is a .PNG file so it has a transparent background. It is 300 dpi. There are no drop-shadows so you can add your own as desired.

Stay tuned for the entire alpha AND numbers PLUS I'll be uploading another Obama digital scrapbooking background paper! TODAY!!

Be sure to check the archive list (left side of my blog) for other Obama digital designs by Webajeb!

Webajeb Word of the Year 2009

(click on the banner to visit Tip Junkie)

Usually I would reserve a topic like New Year's resolutions for my personal blog, but I've come across something along the lines of a resolution that I think also relates to my small business.

At Tip Junkie's blog, this week's "Talk To Me Tuesday" post is about something similar to New Year's resolutions but, I think, powerfully different.

The idea is to choose a single word that represents, or sums up, what you want for yourself for 2009. I participated in the exercise on a personal level, which you can read about here, but I decided to also choose a word to use as a reminder of what I want for my small business in 2009.

Of course, some of the first words to come to mind are Craft, Create, or Imagine, but no one of those words really covers all I hope for with regard to my designs, my services, or my products. Those words float around in my head all the time anyway. Finally, I realized that what I really long to do, and what I believe will be the most productive thing I could do this coming year for the growth of my business, is:

STRETCH

So that's my Word of the Year for Webajeb Digital Photo Albums & Portfolios.

I hope you'll pop over to the Tip Junkie and join in the Word of the Year exercise. Not only will it get you thinking, and get you motivated to figure out a distinct direction that you'd like your life to take, but there's a giveaway, too!! A gorgeous custom-designed pendant inscribed with your chosen word courtesy of Tabetha of Reminisce Heirlooms. It will be given away to randomly chosen participant, so get over there!

Cool Collages

I've been creating collages today, with the Quick Collage Templates by Scrapbooks Etc. Here are a few.

Ocean Beach at Golden Gate State Park , California:
The historic Fisher-Hanlon House in Benicia, CA.:
The Solano County Fair in California:
Queen Wilhelmina Garden at Golden Gate Park, California:
Aren't these cool and fun? I'll be making more. I'm finding collages are perfect when I have a bunch of "general" photos of an outing or event. You know...those photos that you love, but really don't require a caption, and sometimes not even a title, because they pretty much tell the "story" on their own?

Gather up a handful of your own photos and send them off to me. I'll make you one of these lickity-split!

Variation on a Cool Digital Scrapbooking Technique

Today I worked on a two-page layout for one of my customers. Her husband built a huge truck for the purpose of "bogging" it; in other words, driving it through muddy bogs until it's entirely covered in mud! I had never heard of this - maybe it's something only done in Canada? I must say the photos sure look like fun, though!

Above is just one of the photos on the layout. I clipped the layout title right out of the photo, and I love the way it turned out. This is a variation on a technique I wrote about on my blog earlier this month.

View the finished 2-page layout on my website, www.webajeb.com. Click on the Slideshows link at the top of the home page, then scroll down and click on "Krysta's Family Album."

Sisters Layout, and Thank you, DigiTreats!

Pamela, at DigiTreats, has been slowly working her way through the alphabet and creating digital kits for each letter. I didn't stumble on her blog until she was at around letter O, but I was able to purchase the kits for "K" AND she allows commercial-use. Her kits are sooooo cute! And so much fun to use.

I did this layout for a customer with two little girls whose names both begin with the letter K. The background paper and the little "k" button are from Pamela's Skip-K-kit. The ribbon, flowers and leaves are by Mulberry Lane papers.

Perfect paper and elements for these little sweeties!

Digital Scrapbooking for You - But first you have to be able to find me!

I've been doing some research on optimizing my website, www.webajeb.com. How was I to know there's so much to learn?? I have had to learn terms like "keywords," "XML site map," "title tags," and "H1 headers," not to mention that I'm going to have to start tweaking the HTML code of my site. Yeah, the HTML code. We won't even go into that!

But, at the end of it all, I should have a website that is more frequently returned in the results list when people are searching for a service such as mine. That's been a big mystery. How to get noticed on the internet.

It's important because, so far, 90% of my clients have found me on the internet. So I have been studying up on what search terms people are using, how often, and how much competition there is for each term. Whew!

Not an exact science, by any means and, like the internet itself, it changes frequently. Someday I hope to have someone else do this stuff for me, like when my business has grown to the point where I have enough work to keep me busy 40 hrs/week. Until then, the extra hours I have available will be spent tweaking the html code of my website pages and believe me, I'd much rather be designing scrapbook layouts! Nothing's drier and more tedious than the html code behind a web page! If you are curious about what it looks like, go to my website, www.webajeb.com, do a right-click on the home page and then choose "View Source."

You'll be sorry you did. Welcome to my world!

Digital Scrapbook Layout - 'Lil Buckaroo

It's been awhile since I did any 8.5" x 11" layouts so it was fun to work within a different shaped space. Here is a layout I did for a new client. Her little daughter was helping out at "Branding Day" at a neighbor's ranch. Isn't that the sweetest little buckaroo??? I'm having so much fun with the photos. Next I'll add the kids' (and Dad's) names in the lower left-hand corner and it will be done.

The background paper and metal cowboy star are Club Scrap (Wild Wild West kit), and the ribbons are from "Real Ribbons for Digital Scrapbookers" by Heirloom Scrapbooks. Font is Captain Howdy.

Photos - Pairing up the Old & New

It's always fun to come across photos, like the two above, that so well illustrate family traits. The boys in these two pictures are cousins, but these pictures were taken 20 years apart. Yet, look how similar they are! Their knees and legs are the same, the way they stand when they first get out of a swimming pool, even the way their hair sticks up in the back.

They are obviously related!

Do you have photos like these, that were taken years apart, or of remote family members, that illustrate a family trait or similarity? I'd love to see them!

ShaZAM'n my Photos

Here's why I love blogs...people share so much COOL STUFF!

The English Geek wrote today about a new, quick & easy Photoshop technique that she'd found at Jessica Sprague's blog. Jessica calls it "ShaZAM" and it really makes the colors POP!

I decided to try it right away, on the above photo of my cousin, Stacy's, youngest son, Nick, during a swimming lesson. This next photo shows the result:
Wow!! The funny thing is that I thought that the original was a perfectly fine photo, but the enhanced version has much better color and contrast. I love this technique and am going to make a Photoshop Action for it becauseI'm going to be using it a LOT. My custom-designed digital scrapbook clients are going to love it, too.

Thx, Jessica!

A Clean & Classic Digital Scrapbook Layout

One of my favorite layout styles, as I've mentioned before in this blog, is the clean & classic look with minimum embellishments, awesome background paper, a simple but appropriate title. This style allows the photos to speak for themselves.

This is a layout I did a couple of days ago for one of my clients. These photos are from Martha's Vineyard. When I put them on a blank layout, I immediately knew I wanted a simple, but kind of elegant, background paper that would bring out the blues in the photos.

The background paper in this layout was created using an overlay & tutorial by MCA Designs at My Scrap Shop. The metal embellishments (photo corners, brads, and title frame) are from Club Scrap.
